Building Support

On-Campus
1 Class Session, 1.5 Hours
4th-8th

Students design and build a structure that will support one of our instructors. With only rope, wooden dowels and a lesson in knot tying, students must work together to complete this highly creative challenge.

What’s Covered

In this class students will discuss how to best work as a team and the different styles of leadership. Through the class activities, students will be tasked to communicate effectively in order to build the strongest structure possible. Students will get a chance to learn in a hands-on approach as they design and build their structures.

This is a great inclement weather activity. Students stay warm and dry indoors while engaged in fun hands on activities.

Lessons & Activities

Leaders and Team Players Discussion

The students will discuss how to be a team player and a leader, and the qualities needed to succeed in both.

Knot Tying

Students will learn to tie two different knots, the square lashing and clove hitch. The students will be split up in two different groups and each will learn one of the knots and then teach the other group the knot they learned.

Building

Using the knots they just learned as well as any previous knowledge of knots, students will work together to design and build a structure that that will support one of our instructors.

What People Are Saying

I loved my experience at Pali. In my time as an instructor, I was able to develop many skills in the classroom as a teacher and as a leader. I would highly recommend this position for anyone who would like to start a career in the Outdoor Education Industry.

Impressive! This is our first time to Pali. I have taken students to four other SoCal science camps and I would highly recommend Pali and plan to return next year.
